Antibes -
Juan Les Pins: Antibes-Juan
les Pins is one of the most well known resorts on the Côte d'Azur, located
between Nice and Cannes.
Ancient Greek fortified town Antibes manages to be a historic town, but also an
eventful and innovating town.
The historic aim remains with the ramparts along the sea and the long
protective wall along the port and in the old town with plenty of little streets
for exploring, restaurants of all types and lots of shops. The Port Vauban,
is the largest marina in Europe; on one side of it you'll discover the
16th-century Fort Carré massive, star-shaped fortress on a promontory
overlooking the old port and on the other side you'll stroll on the "billionaires
wharf", the large yachts jetty which welcomes the worlds largest yachts
every summer! Covered Markets, Brocantes, Picasso Museum in the Grimaldi
castle, Antibes offers nice and peacefull moments. Leaving the smooth ambiance
of Antibes we reach the most exciting side of the resort: Juan les Pins !
Juan-les-Pins part is a seaside resort and night-life area of
sandy beaches, boutiques, night clubs and casino. "Juan" also welcomes
for over 40 years the legendary jazz festival which has brought the stars
to Antibes. From Bechet, Armstrong to Milesor Ella...they've all been here. And
it still goes on, as the pine trees are still the rendezvous for the headlining
Jazz musicians and the new born stars.
Between Antibes and Juan les Pins, you'll cross the Cap d'Antibes.
This large park peninsula hosts lots of millionaires villas and residences, the Garoupe
Beach and the famous "Eden Roc", hotel reputed to be the most
beautiful hotel in the world and the hotel of choice for some famous people who
prefer to avoid the bright lights of the Croissette in Cannes during their short
stays on the Côte d'Azur...
Beaulieu:Between
Monaco and Nice, Beaulieu is a little resort on the "Basse Corniche",
its name means "beautiful place" in Frenh and it is well named! You
can choose what you prefer to do: visit the Greek villa "Kérylos"
constructed in the image of an antique Greek palace with interior decorated by
mosaics, marble, frescos and treasures from the 6th to the 10th century BC,
gamble at the Casino or simply relax on the sandy beaches !
Cannes: Renowned
as the jewel in the crown of the Riviera resorts, Cannes is home of some of the
"most exclusive": Most exclusive Palaces, Festivals, Restaurants or
Names.
Strolling on the "Croisette" between the famous the Film
Festival Palace, sandy beaches, Palaces, the Old Harbour and all
luxurious yachts.
Shopping in the "Rue d'Antibes", la Croisette and the Old Town
"Le Suquet" with its pittoresque "rue Meynadier".
Discovering Cannes Medieval Hours on the Lerins Islands: take a 15-minute
boat ride from the Old Harbour to the Ile Saint-Honorat with its 11th century
monastery and abbey famous for its Lerina liquor, made by the Cistercian monks,
who prepared it from local plants. Then on Ile Sainte Marguerite visit the Fort
Royal built under Richelieu and transformed by architect Vauban in the 17th
century and see the state prisons, which were built under Louis XIV and welcomed
the Man in the Iron Mask !
Cannes offers everything for a perfect time...and for all tastes!
Eze Village:
Next to Monaco,
this medieval village, also called the eagle nest, is one of the most
picturesque spots in the region. 400m above the sea it offers a unique panorama
of the Frech and Italian Riviera.
Eze is also well known for its gastronomic restaurants: "La Chèvre d'Or"
castle, now part of the Relais et Châteaux establishment and the "Chateau
Eza" which was the last residence of SAR Prince William of Sweden.
You will also find perfume and glass factories, arts and crafts shops
through the village small narrow streets and archways leading to the Exotic
garden in the Ruin of the Medieval fortress.
Gourdon: This
ancient medieval village overlooks the Loup valley with wonderful panoramic
views along the French riviera.
What to do:
- Visit of the Castle of Gourdon which was classed as an historical
monument in 1971.
- Shopping: local arts and crafts : stained glass, silk painting,
perfumes, soaps, honey...
Grasse: Inland, between
Nice and Cannes, Grasse is the getaway to the great countryside. This small town
is "simply" called the perfume capital of the world!
The French perfume industry began in Grasse in the 16th century reason why you
will find perfume museums and perfume factories to visit.
You'll also have the possibility to create your own fragrance !
La Turbie:
On
the "Grande Corniche" Looking over the Principality of Monaco from a
height of 1150m, la Turbie is the highest point on the long Roman road into Gaul
(Provence). La Turbie has conserved a number of its remains from the past :
gateways from the XIII° century village walls, vaulted porches and the famous
"Augustus Trophy". The Trophée des Alpes, or Augustus Trophy,
was built in 6 BC, it was a 50 m high monument to the glory of Augustus. Now
only 35 m high and half in ruin, it's still an imposing monument.
Menton: Last French
city before Italy, Menton is all at once a city of gardens, a seaport, and a
beach resort. Its exceptional climate makes the city a paradise of gardens,
ideal for growing orang, lemon trees, palm trees,and mimosa.
Every year in February Menton is the stage for an immense celebration called the
"Fête des Citrons" (Lemon Festival).
The old town, le Vieux Menton, is a pedestrian area full of shops of all sorts
and terrace cafés.
Nice: Capital
of the French Riviera, Nice is the fifth largest city of France.
With its exceptional climate its worth taking the time to discover Nice any time
of the year. The city offers a rich architectural and cultural heritage, a
multitude of parks and gardens and large shopping streets.
Nice has a total of 19 museums and galleries, 32 classified historical monuments
and 300 ha of woodland and green areas.
The old town with its flower market, the
tiny craft shops and its narrow streets where you will taste the
Pissaladières (onion, anchoy tarts), the Pan Bagnat (vegetable
and tuna sandwich), the Salade Niçoise and others...
The famous "English Promenade"
along the beach with the luxurious hotels as the Negresco, the
café terraces.
The hill of Cimiez, its Roman Ruins with Matisse Museum, and Chagall
Museum.
In the Center Town large shopping area starting by the Massena Place with
markets, boutiques and restaurants but also possibility to visit the biggest Russian
Church of the world outside Russia.
Finally you will ponctually enjoy Nice Carnival and its Bataille de Fleur
(Flower Battle) in February or the Jazz Festival in the arena of Cimiez during
summer.
Roquebrune: Situated between
Menton and Monaco , this seaside resort starts at the water's edge and goes all
the way up to its perched village.
Roquebrune village is a medieval village perched on a rocky outcrop high over
the Mediterranean, dominated by the 10th-century chateau.
this picturesque place with narrow streets has a great view from Roquebrune Cap
Martin to Monte-Carlo. Following
one of the paved paths down the hill you'll see one of the oldest olive trees of
the region (over 1000-year-old millenaire).
St Jean-Cap-Ferrat:
Wonderful peninsula
between Nice and Monaco, St Jean-Cap-Ferrat is the "Hollywood" of the
Côte d'Azur; one of the first residential sites on the Riviera. Its main spot
is the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, former mansion of the Baronness Béatrice
Ephrussi de Rothschild it welcomes 7 different style gardens (French
Traditional, Florentine, Spanish, Exotic, Lapidary, Japanese, Provencal) and an
enormous art collection. Located on the top of the peninsula, it offers a great
panorama.
You can also stroll on the harbour with its terrasses restaurants or enjoy the
"Paloma" or "Passable" beaches.
St Paul de Vence: Built
on its rocky outcrop between two deep valleys, Saint Paul is one of the most
intact fortified village in Provence. The exceptional light of the
surrounding area has inspired numerous famous artists, painters, writers and
poets. That's why the village is filled with art galleries, craft
workshops, provençal boutiques and museums. Charming streets, floral
exuberance of the gardens, vine-covered stone walls, shady squares, ancient
fountains, gateways and porches or wonderful windows; even if you don't feel
like buying anything, the simple fact of walking through the village worth the
journey.
Last but not least St Paul welcomes:
- The Maeght Foundation constitutes one of the most important collections
of twentieth century art in Europe.
- The restaurant La Colombe d'Or which welcomed some famous artists like
Braque, Matisse and César. You can view their works on display here.
- Le Saint Paul: part of the Relais et Châteaux establishment and
Michelin-starred restaurant.
- The Russian born painter Mark Chagall's tomb in the Saint Paul-de-Vence
cemetery.
St Tropez:
Former little fishermen village, St
Tropez is the International tourist mecca, the most fashionable resort on the
Riviera.
Beautifull sandy beaches during
the day, shopping in the afternoon along the harbour in the old city, and
night club till the sunrise ...
From Picasso, Brigitte Bardot to Brad Pitt or Georges Clooney, St Tropez is THE
spot for the international Jet Set.
Byblos, Nikki beach, La Voila rouge, Club 55, Pago Pago, VIP Room in St Tropez
everything is famous !
But "St Trop" succeed to keep its fishermen aim also specially at the
Place des Lices where Tropezians play "Pétanque" (balls) drinking a
Pastis; in the Old town with its 18th c. church and its bell tower and in the
Old Port.
You can also discover all around the city, the little villages of Ramatuelle,
Cogolin, Grimaud with its paved and flowered streetsand the ruins of the
feudal castle and Port Grimaud also called the
Venice of the Riviera.
Villefranche sur Mer: Situated
near Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, Villefranche is an amazing place. Its superb harbour
known to be one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean is the deepest and
most protected of the Riviera.
The port bordered by restaurants and their terraces, the Saint Elme
citadel from the 16th century, the old town with narrow streets and tiny
shops or the " obscure" street that is completely covered for about
half its length contribute to the beauty of the village.
Jean Cocteau, a native of the area, liked to come to Villefranche where he made
friends with the fishermen to whom he dedicated his re-decoration of the Chapelle
Saint-Pierre.
